Dopo anni di pubblico disprezzo e di citazioni ingiuriose, i film di Raffaello Materazzo, con in testa la gloriosa trilogia Tormento-Catene-Figli di nessuno, portabandiera del cinema fotoromanzante, vengono inopinatamente riscoperti da giovani critici agguerriti, che dedicano loro rassegne e cicli monografici nei circuiti d'essai. Il libro si limita a abbozzare un approccio attorno al problema del "neorealismo d'appendice" con due interventi che salgono lungo versanti opposti. Da una parte un'analisi in negativo della funzione per così dire sociale svolta dal cinema "alla Matarazzo" negli anni 40-50, non senza uno stretto rapporto con la fiorente industria del fotoromanzo a fumetti.
