What's Going On Live presenta un concerto leggendario di Marvin Gaye: l'unica volta in cui il cantante soul ha eseguito dal vivo il suo capolavoro del 1971 What's Going On. L'unica volta in cui lo ha eseguito per intero. Il concerto è avvenuto nel Febbraio del 1972, al Kennedy Center di Washington, D.C.. Città natale di Gaye e primo concerto dopo quattro anni. La registrazione era già stata edita sulla edizione Deluxe di What's Going On ( da tempo fuori catalogo ). Ma ora è stata rimasterizzata, usando finalmente i masters originali, introvabili quando è stata messa nella edizione Deluxe.
Per la prima volta su CD la full performance di James Brown e della sua band, registrata ad Augusta, Georgia, 1 Ottobre 1969. Il concerto presenta brani quali Say it Loud, Kansas City, Mother Popcorn, It's a Man's Man's Man's World, Please, Please, Please, Give It Up or Turnit A Loose e molte altre.
Booker T. Jones, già leader di Booker T. and The Mg's, ha da tempo intrapreso la sua carriera come solista. Ha inciso diversi dischi a suo nome, senza mai tradire le sue radici. Cosa che fa anche in questo disco, una sorta di companion sonoro della sua imminente biografia, giustamente intitolata Time is Tight. Not by Note ripercorre la sua carriera, tra brani vecchi rivisitati e canzoni composte per l'occasione. Terzo album per i Teskey Brothers, band soul australiana che ha riscosso parecchio successo, ma anche diversi risconoscimenti, con i primi due lavori in studio: Half Mile Harvest e Run Home Slow. Il gruppo, che basa molto del proprio suono su notevoli armonie vocali, è una solul band a tutti gli effetti. Live at The Forum, registrato lo scorso Novembre al Forum di Melbourne, Australia. il disco presenta il meglio del repertorio del quartetto,
con diversi riferrimenti al sound di Otis Redding.
Don Bryant è un artista di colore di una certa età. Marito di Ann Peebles ( con la quale ha scritto I Can't Stand The Rain ed ha vissuto assieme per almeno 50 anni ), Bryant era uno degli artisti della Hi Records di Willie Mitchell. Sfortunatamente all'epoca è stato oscurato dai colleghi di lavoro, come la stessa Peebles oppure Al Greene, Otis Clay, O.V. Wright etc. diventati più famosi di lui. Ora, finalmente, ha la sua occasione. grazie alla Fat Possum. You Make Me Fee è un solido disco di vero soul, che riporta alla luce uno degli interpreti originli dell'epoca, che arriva dal periodo d'oro di questa musica.
